Rehabilitation of Physical Disability in Cambridge

In-patient and community rehabilitation after physical illness is generally organised according to the patients age and underlying disorder.


Children under 16 are managed by paediatric, neuropsychological and specialist surgical services in Addenbrooke's and the community e.g. Child Development Centre. 

Acute treatment and in-patient rehabilitation for people of all ages after stroke is organised by Dr Liz Warburton and Dr Eoin O'Brien on the
Lewin Stroke and Rehabilitation Unit in Addenbrooke's.

For other disorders, services for people over 65 years are provided by the Department of Medicine for the Elderly in Addenbrooke's and neighbouring acute and community hospitals.

In-patient rehabilitation for people between 16 and 65 years with other neurodisability, e.g. traumatic brain injury, sub-arachnoid haemorrhage and spinal cord lesions, is organised by
Dr Stephen Kirker in the Lewin Stroke and Rehabilitation Unit, and some patients above this age are also accepted. The Outreach Occupational Therapy service follows up and treats young adults with acquired brain injury in the Cambridge area.
